Part one of the event will feature AOTM MC, Fr. John Echert. Father Echert will give a twenty minute presentation on the encyclical letter Humane Vitae titled "Catholicism and Contraception.” Many Catholics practice artificial contraception and think nothing of it, or they think Church is just "out of date” in her teachings. Father Echert will explain what the Church’s teachings are on contraception as stated in "Humane Vitae.” Pope Paul Vl’s encyclical also forecast that societal use of contraception would result in the break down of the family, abortion, and many other evils. Father Echert will layout the Church’s teaching from this prophetic document, and set the ground work for our debate.
Part two of our presentation will be a debate between our very own Michael
Matt and David Deavel. The debate will consider the question, "Is NFP Catholic Contraception?” Most Catholics first encounter "Natural Family Planning” in marriage prep courses and are taught that this is an acceptable form of birth control for a family that has serious needs to space or minimize pregnancies. However, some say that this technique only encourages a contraceptive mentality among faithful Catholics, and that the technique should not be so widely encouraged and taught. This question has come to the fore in the recent past, being brought to light by traditionalists in the Church. We know that this is a debate that will cut close to the heart of many people, but we feel it is important to address the issue. Do the traditionalists have a point, or are they way off base? Come and See!
